MUSTANGS FALL IN AREA PLAYOFFS
By CHRIS EDENS, City Editor
The Mustangs stumbled in an 82-60 loss to Metro Christian last Thursday night (March 4) in area basketball playoffs at Skiatook, ending Oologah's season.
The Mustangs finished 20-8 and were conference and district champions.
Oologah ran into a red hot Metro Christian team Thursday. The Patriots were dropping in baskets from all over the court.
"Metro Christian played really well. Their coach said it was the best game they've played all season," Oologah head coach Ron Ward said. "We did the things we needed to do, but they just played a great game."
The Patriots were on fire, making seven 3-pointers in the contest.
Oologah grabbed an early lead with baskets from Jake Taylor and Alec Brunson. The Mustangs were up 11-10 with three minutes left in the first quarter and then the Patriots went on a run. Metro Christian led 22-11 at the end of the first.
Taylor had a traditional three-point play to start the second quarter. The Patriots went on another run and led by 14 points midway through the period.
Taylor made three baskets from the low post to cut into the lead and Kaleb Hotfelt drained a three. Oologah closed the gap, but Metro Christian led 35-28 at half.
The Patriots went on another run to start the third. Brunson knocked down two 3-pointers for Oologah, but Metro Christian still led 57-43 after three quarters.
The Mustangs tried to rally in the fourth. Taylor Scott had three field goals and he went 4-of-4 from the line, but Metro kept pulling away. The Patriots went on to win 82-60.
Taylor led the team with 21 points. Scott had 14 points, Brunson had 12, Josh Yager had 8, Hotfelt had 3 and Bryce Mitchell had 2 points.
Six seniors suited up for the last time in an Oologah uniform. Coach Ward said Scott, Yager, Mitchell, Caleb Motton, Derek Henderson and Jonah Burks will leave big shoes to fill.
"I told the seniors there was no reason to hang their heads. They were conference champs three times and this year they won the district and they were regional consolation champions," Ward said. "They're a great bunch of kids. I looked forward to coming to practice every day because those seniors had such great attitudes. They'll definitely be missed."
