VIOLET MARIE HIGEONS
Violet Marie Higeons, 85, passed away Thursday, July 31, 2008 at her home in Owasso. She was born in Snider to Emory E. and Nellie May (Warren) Morris. She loved her family and friends, cooking and sewing. She is survived by her husband, Carl, of the home; two sons, Carl Leroy Higeons and wife Marilyn of Talala and Jerald Leon Higeons of Nowata; one daughter, Janet Marie Ingmire of Tulsa; one brother, Royce Morris and wife Wanda of Chelsea; one sister, Velma Jones and husband Chester of Galt, CA; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Aug. 5 at Epworth United Methodist Church in Chelsea where she and Carl were married 68 years ago. Rev. Darrell Cox officiated. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery in Talala under the direction of Seaman-Blanke Funeral Service of Chelsea.



PAUL LEFEBVRE
Paul Ernest Lefebvre, creator of the Will Rogers Memorial Museums logo and father of former Will Rogers Memorial Commission director Michelle Lefebvre-Carter, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008 in Oklahoma City. Lefebvre was a co-founder of "Oklahoma Today" magazine in 1956, when he was asked by then Oklahoma Gov. Raymond Gary to create a magazine to promote Oklahoma's image. He leaves his wife, Irene; daughter; two sons, Paul Lefebvre II and Mark Lefebvre; and a grandson, John Paul Lefebvre. Memorial contributions may be made to the Will Rogers Heritage Trust.



SHARON CAVE RICE
Sharon Ruth Cave Rice passed away Saturday, Aug. 2 at St. John Medical Center in Tulsa of complications from multiple sclerosis. She was born in Artesia, NM to Chester and Dorothy Cave. She grew up in Nowata and graduated from Nowata High School. She lived in Rabbs Creek area of rural Oologah for many years and was the Oologah-Talala correspondent for the Collinsville News in the mid 1980s. She is survived by her half brother, Bill Cave and many friends. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 9, at the Frances Streitel Villa chapel in Collinsville under the direction of Moore's Funeral Home of Owasso.



MARY LEE RICHARDSON
Mary Lee Richardson, 90, passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2008 in Durant. She was born Sept. 3, 1917 in Kenefic to Girdy Paul Walker and Ida Holcomb Walker. She married Troy Edward Richardson in Caddo on July 17, 1943. She was a lifelong resident of Durant. She is survived by her son, Jerry Richardson and wife Kathy of Durant; daughters, Shirley Brown and husband Shane of Mesquite, TX, Linda Pearson and husband Bill of Oologah and Judy Vitalie and husband, Ted Ashtabula of OH; grandsons, Dean Richardson of TX, Heath Richardson of OK, Adam Parker of FL and Shane Attaway of TX; granddaughters, Michelle Richardson of CA, Vannah Taylor, of TX and Julie Parker of NM; eleven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Woody Walker and his wife Betty of Durant. Services were held July 25 at Coffey-Murray Funeral Home with Rev. Ross Kirven officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Nida under the direction of Coffey-Murray Funeral Home.



BUTLER MARTIN WELCH
Butler Martin Welch, 81, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2008 at his home. He was born Sept. 16, 1926 to Ausley Ashmore and Francis Irene (Williams) Welch. He grew up on allotment land of his grandfather on Cowskin Praire in Grove. During WWII, he served in the Navy. He worked in the electrical field for more than forty years. In 1980, he began a new adventure as a bail bondsman in Rogers County. He made a bid for Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. He was married to Agnes "Tootie" Gritts and to Mary Jane Vanderpool. Both of them preceded him in death. He is survived by his son, John Cobb Welch and wife, Julie; step-daughter, Betty Johnston and husband, Bill; grandchildren, John Welch II and wife, Tammy, Jacob Welch, Jeff Hale and wife, Sarah, Steve Johnston, Michael Johnston and Misty Eppler; great-grandchildren, Jaxson Welch, Max Hale, Julia Hale and Ashlynd Johnston; sister, Gladys Kozicki and faithful friend, Woody; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Services were held July 28, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ray Crawford, Chaplain Steve Holestine and Rev. David Adair officiating. Burial was in Wann Cemetery, Oologah under the direction of Musgrove-Merriott-Smith Funeral Service and Crematory. The U.S. Navy provided military honors.



HAROLD I. “BOB” SURRIDGE
Harold I. “Bob” Surridge, 84, a long-time resident of rural Oologah, passed away Friday. July 18h, 2008. He was born Nov. 1, 1923 in rural Neosho, Jefferson County, MO. to Thomas James and Emma Rilla “Murphy’ Surridge. He moved to Oologah in 1963, and purchased a beautiful pecan grove property and raised registered Polled Hereford cattle. He is survived by his wife, Wanda, of their home in Oologah; his children, Mark Surridge of Oologah, Marti Woody and husband, Jarett, of Claremore, Lori Chapman and husband, Chip, of Tulsa, and Erin Ashworth and husband Trey, of Claremore; grandchildren Bryan Woody, Justin Surridge, Joshua Woody, Logan Woody, Danielle Ashworth and Taylor Ashworth; brothers Jerry Surridge and wife, Phyllis, of Springfield, MO and Roy Surridge and wife, Eileen, of Pittsburg, KS; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Services were to be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 23, at the Chapel of the Garden at Rice Funeral Service. Burial is in Wann Cemetery under the direction of Rice Funeral Service.



WILLIAM C. WHITFORD 
William Charles Whitford, 81, passed away Saturday, July 19, 2008 at Claremore Regional Medical Veterans Retirement Facility. He was born Dec. 30, 1926 in Nowata to Charles A. Whitford and Esther Holt Whitford. He retired in 1988 from Nowata Machine Works.  He is survived by his wife, Joan of the home; three sons, Bill A. Whitford and his wife, Jan, of Nowata, John C. Whitford and his wife, Julie, of Owasso and Michael L. Whitford of Nowata; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Charolett Kincaide of Sand Springs and one sister-in-law Judy Nutting of Siloam Springs, AR.  Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church in Nowata.  Rev. Jim Perkins officiated. Burial was in Nowata Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of the Benjamin Funeral Service. A memorial has been established with the Nowata City Library, 224 S. Pine, Nowata, Oklahoma 74048.   



    BARBARA “SUE” DICKEY
Barbara “Sue” Dickey, 75, passed away Sunday, July 13, 2008. She was born April 12, 1933 in Vera to Roy and Ada Peace. She’s been married to her childhood sweetheart, James Dickey, for 58 years. She is survived by her husband, James Dickey; two children, Dianna Newton and Roy and wife, Lisa Dickey; grandchildren, Jamie and Scott Bryan, Steve and Petra Coldwell, Cheryl and Jeremiah Williams, Carrie and Red Warren, Cody Dickey and Daryl and B.J. Newton; great-grandchildren, Jessica, Lindsey, Daniel and Riley Bryan, Monique Hicks, Baylee and Hunter Jones, Amber, Colton and Jake Newton, Leo James Williams and Jodi Warren. Graveside services were to be held at 10 a.m. July 16 at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Collinsville under the direction of Collinsville Dolton Funeral Home.



WILLIAM JACK “BILL” EWTON
William Jack “Bill” Ewton, 81, passed away Sunday, July 6, 2008. He was born April 5, 1927 in Dardanelle, AK to Andrew “Jack” Jackson and Emma Jane (Heffley) Ewton. He served in the Army during WWII. He married Bonnie Lavern Golden on Sept. 14, 1950 in Claremore. He was employed as a machinist and welder and retired from Centrilift in 1985. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie, of the home in Oologah; children, Jerry Ewton and wife, Linda, of Claremore, Bobby Ewton of Oologah, Joyce Brown and husband, Jess, of Pryor, Brenda Alhalabi and husband, Mike, of St. Louis, Missouri, Cindy Fletcher and husband, Chris, and Paul Ewton, all of Oologah; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.  He was preceded by his parents and two sisters, Vanna Jo Earl and Dora Allene Brown. Services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, at Liberty Freewill Baptist Church in Oologah. Eldie Abel shared words of comfort. Burial followed in Wann Cemetery under the direction of Rice Funeral Service.             



JOANNE HEFNER
JoAnne Hefner, 66, of Land O’Lakes, FL, passed away Monday, July 14, 2008 at Hernando Pasco Hospice. She was born Nov. 17, 1941 in Pryor to Albert Russell Jackson and Jolora Irene (Cutshall) Jackson. She grew up in Bartlesville. She is survived by her husband, Ron of the home; two sons, Rusty Hefner and his wife, Vickie, of Talala and Ron Hefner and his wife, Annette Marie, of Westfield, MA; one daughter, Lydia “Dawn” Jordan; nine grandchildren; eight sisters and two brothers. She is preceded death by her parents and one brother. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. July 18 at Hodges Funeral home and burial will be in Florida National Cemetery.



SACELIEN MOUA
Sacelien Ntshiab Li Dej Moua, 2, of Oologah passed away Sunday, July 13, 2008 at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa. She was born Aug. 10, 2005 in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, to Xai and Yia Moua. She is survived by her parents, Xai and Yia V. Moua; sisters, Kia Moua of Wausau, WI, Ci Moua and Pahoua Moua; brothers, Chong L. Moua and Kong C. Moua, all of Oologah. Funeral services will be Friday, July 18 from 8 a.m. till 10 p.m. and resume Saturday, July 19 at 7 a.m. at Mowery Funeral Service Chapel in Owasso with burial at 11 a.m. in Graceland Memorial Park Cemetery in Owasso under the direction of Mowery Funeral Service.
